
Please note the umbrellas in the above picture which was taken at
Toros a la Tica. It was clearly not raining. We saw this occurrence at
El Tope as well – an umbrella here is an all-weather accessory: keeping you somewhat dry when it rains, and keeping you in the shade when the sun is beating down.
Wes told me that here only black umbrellas are called “
paraguas” (literally: for waters, i.e. umbrella), any other colour and it is a “
sombrilla” (from
sombra meaning shade). Of course, the colour is irrelevant because both
sombrillas and
paraguas can be used for either purpose.
